Stimulus 1 - Studio pilot A community printmaking studio introduced an amber bench light immediately before solvent cleanup. Initially, the solvent odour had prompted discomfort and rapid withdrawal; after repeated pairings, some volunteers tensed when the light appeared, including during water-based cleanup. Correctly fitted gloves and respirators earned a paper token. Tokens were first delivered after every correct cleanup, then after an unpredictable number averaging four. Protective-equipment use fell when tokens stopped without warning. Stimulus 2 - Implementation constraints Respirator fit must be checked individually, volunteers may opt out of solvent work, and public performance charts are prohibited. The token budget lasts six weeks. Coordinators want safe practice to continue when tokens end, without using humiliation, unsafe exposure or loss of access to the studio. They can provide private feedback, modelled practice, task choice and naturally occurring feedback about clean equipment and reduced exposure.
(a) Explain acquisition, stimulus generalisation, discrimination, extinction, continuous and variable-ratio reinforcement, shaping and intrinsic or natural reinforcement in relation to the pilot. Identify evidence that the pilot did not produce stable safety behaviour for every volunteer. (b) Design and justify an ethical next-stage learning program that develops correctly fitted protective-equipment use and maintains it after tokens end. Analyse relevant classical and operant processes, cognition, individual variation, measurement and the implementation constraints.
