This is one real question from the source-controlled pack. The answer, worked solution, and marking guidance remain in the purchased PDF.
Stimulus 1 - Exhibit claim A marine-rescue exhibition states: 'One frightening alarm permanently conditions fear of every alarm.' Its demonstration sounds a piercing alarm immediately before a tilting deck. Several visitors later tense when the same alarm begins, but most do not tense to a soft navigation tone. The sign gives no follow-up evidence. Stimulus 2 - Rehearsal record Trainees who reported alarm anxiety completed a voluntary sequence beginning with a low-volume recording while practising slow breathing, then progressed to louder recordings and supervised deck drills. Anxiety ratings declined over six sessions. A small increase appeared after a two-month break, and two trainees withdrew before the final drill.
(a) Use both stimuli to explain acquisition, generalisation, discrimination, extinction, spontaneous recovery, graduated exposure and systematic desensitisation. Identify two reasons the exhibition's permanent-every-alarm claim exceeds its evidence. (b) Argue a well-reasoned psychological point of view about the usefulness and limits of classical conditioning for explaining and changing the alarm response. Analyse relevant theory, evidence, cognition, individual variation and ethical participation.
