This is one real question from the source-controlled pack. The answer, worked solution, and marking guidance remain in the purchased PDF.
Stimulus 1 - Ferry warning chime For six rough crossings, a distinctive three-note terminal chime sounded immediately before passengers boarded a ferry and experienced strong deck motion. Some later reported nausea when the chime sounded on calm days. A similar two-note phone alert produced little response. After repeated calm crossings, the nausea response declined, then briefly returned when the route reopened after winter. Stimulus 2 - Theatre safety rehearsal Community-theatre ushers earned a coloured token for each successive improvement in an evacuation routine. Five tokens could be exchanged for a preferred shift. A skipped door check removed one token. Rehearsals stopped after ushers completed the full sequence reliably.
(a) Explain acquisition, stimulus discrimination, extinction, spontaneous recovery, shaping, secondary reinforcement and response cost in relation to the stimuli. (b) Analyse and critically evaluate classical and operant conditioning as explanations of the behaviours shown. Use both stimuli and other relevant psychological evidence to argue a well-reasoned point of view, including one ethical limit on deliberate behaviour change.
